Kaiser Permanente is the largest nonprofit health plan in the United States, serving 8.6 million members in nine states and the District of Columbia. They are an integrated health delivery system, which means that they provide and coordinate the entire scope of care for their members.
Kaiser Permanente's business expanded dramatically after the U.S. Congress passed the Health Maintenance Organization Act of 1973. The law provided Federal grants to start and expand HMO health plans, and removed some of the restrictions of doing business as an HMO plan.
Changes in the health insurance market forced Kaiser Permanente to scale back its operations in the late 1990s. Many regional branches in the Northeastern United States and along the Atlantic coast were either closed or sold.
Despite the downturn in the late 1990s, Kaiser Permanente remains a financially strong organization. Today, there are over 8.5 million members of Kaiser Permanente. Their healthcare provider network includes 12,879 physicians and 37 medical centers.
